Fix a Black Screen in ShaderGlass
A black ShaderGlass overlay may come from the capture source, window mode, graphics compatibility or a broken shader preset; checking each part separately is more reliable than reinstalling immediately.
Before you begin
Use Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or Windows 11 and a DirectX 11-capable GPU. Confirm the source window or capture device works without additional post-processing. The exact labels can differ between ShaderGlass versions and operating modes.
Step-by-step workflow
- Switch to a known working simple built-in shader.
- Verify the source application is visible and available to be captured in the selected mode.
- Try a supported windowed or borderless layout and check OS capture permissions.
- Check the DirectX 11 GPU driver and Windows build, then retest the same source.
Important details and limitations
Imported shaders can render black if required assets are missing.
A capture failure and a shader rendering failure are different problems.
Some protected video and apps deliberately restrict screen capture.
How to verify the result
Compare the processed scene with the same source shown without ShaderGlass. Watch for clipping, unexpected color changes, black regions and input lag. Keep one parameter fixed at a time while troubleshooting. For version-dependent settings, refer to the developer manual instead of relying on old screenshots.
Questions and answers
Does black output always mean ShaderGlass is incompatible?
No. Test a different source and a built-in shader to identify the failing layer.
Can protected content always be captured?
No. Some applications and DRM-protected media block capture.
