Use ShaderGlass with DOSBox for DOS CRT Effects
ShaderGlass can display CRT effects over DOSBox in supported capture modes, which is useful for low-resolution DOS graphics and pixel aspect-ratio experiments.
Before you begin
Use Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or Windows 11 and a DirectX 11-capable GPU. Confirm the source window or capture device works without additional post-processing. The exact labels can differ between ShaderGlass versions and operating modes.
Step-by-step workflow
- Open the DOS game in a DOSBox window and confirm stable output.
- Configure an appropriate ShaderGlass source/window mode.
- Choose a CRT preset with a sensible aspect ratio for the game.
- Compare text legibility, scaling and frame pacing before saving a DOSBox profile.
Important details and limitations
DOS pixels were not always square; some games need careful aspect-ratio correction.
ShaderGlass is a companion overlay, not a replacement for DOSBox emulation settings.
If capture fails in exclusive fullscreen, try a windowed or borderless arrangement.
How to verify the result
Compare the processed scene with the same source shown without ShaderGlass. Watch for clipping, unexpected color changes, black regions and input lag. Keep one parameter fixed at a time while troubleshooting. For version-dependent settings, refer to the developer manual instead of relying on old screenshots.
Questions and answers
Does ShaderGlass run DOS games?
No. DOSBox runs them; ShaderGlass processes the displayed image.
Can I use the shader without modifying my DOS installation?
Yes. The overlay does not require editing the game files.
